I caught this sunset over Mt Hannah and Salmina Meadow on my mobile phone. I have never been able to get the impact of a sunrise or sunset captured in a mere photo. Still the sky is magnificent and the evening was wonderfully mild.

Draft #2-Timberati on the Graveyard Shift
Lee Lofland over at the Graveyard Shift has asked if I’d like to do a guest column. Lee’s a retired detective who’s “solved cases in areas including narcotics, homicide, rape, murder-for-hire, robbery, and ritualistic and occult crimes. He worked as an undercover officer for several jurisdictions, and he even spent a few years as aContinue reading “Draft #2-Timberati on the Graveyard Shift”
My Front Yard
Thoreau wrote in “Autumnal Tints” Europeans coming to America are surprised by the brilliancy of our autumnal foliage. There is no account of such a phenomenon in English poetry, because the trees acquire but few bright colors there. I’ve heard that some folks don’t think California has seasons. That we don’t have the fall colors.Continue reading “My Front Yard”
Jury Duty
Tuesday, 26 Aug 2008 (less than a week until Labor Day Weekend) was Jury Duty Day. Oh, joy. Still, considering that I’m a writer, it’s a great time for people watching and gathering names, faces, clothing and hair styles, body shapes. It started a few weeks ago when the jury summons came in one ofContinue reading “Jury Duty”
Nightlife in Lake County
We got up and had coffee this morning. I needed it. I was groggy (and probably Mary was too) from a visit by a raccoon in the wee hours. Around 1:10 this morning, Peaches ran down the bedroom and office stairs alerting us to the critter’s presence. I had closed the basement door around 7Continue reading “Nightlife in Lake County”
Copter 104
Yesterday was a pretty quiet and relaxing Sunday. The flock of pubescent girls that had been squawking Friday and Saturday, migrated back to roost elsewhere and we were allowed to listen to the lake lapping at the shore once more. Around 1:30 PM, we got a visit from my former neighbors. I used to workContinue reading “Copter 104”
We Don't Own a Boat
Two of the happiest days in one’s life are the day one gets a boat… Mary had a sailboat. The storms during the winter had reduced the number of functional cleats to one. During Mary’s ownership, it sank twice (Note the black tube on the starboard side–this is connected to a bilge pump). If itContinue reading “We Don't Own a Boat”
